Hand Percussion
These classes focus on
many aspects of hand percussion. Courses are offered at all levels of experience.
JOHN AMIRA - John is a master drummer with over twenty- five years experience teaching and playing. He is the
author of The Music of Santeria, and has taught and performed at Yale University, New England Conservatory and Mannes College.
He has numerous recordings to his credit, as well as performances for theater and film.
MICHAEL WIMBERLY - Michael holds a Masters Degree from Manhattan School of Music, and has had his compositions
performed by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and the Joffrey II Ballet. He has recorded or performed with Steve Coleman, Mama
Tongue, Parliament Funkadelic and Charles Gayle.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS & TUITION
The Collective's hand-percussion courses
are taken as a group of eight. Tuition for an eight-week block is $195. Tuition amounts and class schedules are subject to
change without notice.
CONGA DRUMMING - This
course builds conga technique and explores the beautiful and complex conga rhythms of Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico and the Dominican
Republic.
DJEMBE DRUMMING - This course
focuses on the music of West Africa through the study of indigenous rhythms and songs. Djembe and other West African instruments
are used to produce the rhythms of this rich musical culture.
